Teammates Once Again! -Kim Loeffler
My twin sister Kelly and I have been teammates for most of our athletic careers. We ran track and cross country in High School and at the University of Massachusetts. After College we moved to Boston to pursue graduate degrees and ran with a great running club; The Boston Athletic Association (BAA). Since then, Kelly has moved several times pursuing her athletic dream of making the Olympic Team for the marathon. It has been 7 years since Kelly and I have lived in the same state. Last December, Kelly moved to Burlington Vermont and in addition to having my old training partner back, I am so excited to announce that Kelly and I will be teammates once again in 2007! Kelly has just joined the Timex Triathlon Team and will be racing with me in Lake Placid and Kona! We have so many precious memories of racing and training together; our long runs with our dogs around the lake, workouts when we just laugh non stop, and the days we are just out there kicking each others butts!
Our winter training has been quite a struggle as Mother Nature seems to be playing an awful lot of cruel jokes on us. Yesterday, April 15th, we got about 4 inches of snow. Outside of my 2 races and a 2 week training camp in Tucson, it's been long, mentally challenging, 6 months since I have biked outdoors or ran comfortably under the sun! Looks like Kelly will win the snow bet. Desperately needing to see some sunlight, I took off a few days early to watch Kelly race CA 70.3. This was her first race in over 2 years. She has supported me tremendously over the past years and has yet to miss an Ironman. It was so exciting to watch her race and to be able to repay her for all the support over the past few years. Although, according to Kelly, I have a long way to go with the paybacks. She continuously reminds me of our 2005 Boulder training camp. One day into our camp, Kellys foot got badly infected and required daily IV treatments. She bandaged herself up and went out on her mountain bike and rode 22 miles at 9000ft on the Magnolia Road with me, handing me water and gels and yelling at me to go faster. Crazy right?! Well if you know Kelly, you wouldn't be surprised. She is as hard core as they get. To watch her race and train is amazing and very inspiring, all guts!
With just 3 runs in 4 weeks, Kelly cruised to the finish line taking home an age group win, and slots for both Lake Placid and Hawaii. It has been our goal for 6 years to race Ironman together. With 16 weeks remaining and no current injuries, things are looking good!
After the race we headed over to Carlsbad for our Annual Timex camp. It was so nice to revisit with old friends and teammates and meet some new team members. There was so much energy race week with everyone getting ready for the 2007 race season. I am really looking forward to a great year. My race schedule is a bit aggressive, but I am hoping that by racing more, I will gain some more open water swim experience and see some improvements. Timex has acquired a long list of sponsors and I am fortunate to be racing with some of the best equipment out there. See Timex.com for a list of our supporters! I am very excited about this year. Next up is Wildflower, where I will go out full force and try to defend my long course national championship title against some super fast short course girls and Ironman vets! Thanks for reading!
